Emergency fund
Set a target, choose how funded balance is measured, and track progress on the dashboard.
Why it is separate
An emergency fund is a resilience metric, not just another spending category. PebbleHoard tracks a target, how much is funded, and a percent complete on the portfolio dashboard.
Target modes
| Mode | How target is set |
|---|---|
| Calculated from items | Uses configured months and monthly emergency base amounts on items to compute a target. |
| Fixed amount | You set an explicit dollar target (for example $15,000). |
Configure these under portfolio settings: emergency fund mode, months, and fixed amount when applicable.
Balance modes (what counts as funded)
| Mode | Funded total equals |
|---|---|
| Marked items available | Sum of Available on items flagged include in emergency fund. |
| Marked items extra above min | Sum of surplus above each marked item’s minimum (true “extra cushion”). |
| Emergency type items | Sum of Available on items with type Emergency. |
Tip: Pick one philosophy and stick to it. Mixing mental models (everything is emergency vs only dedicated EF items) makes the percentage hard to trust.
Practical setup
- Decide whether emergency money lives in dedicated items or is a flag on several safety items.
- Set months or a fixed target in portfolio settings.
- Choose a balance mode that matches how you think about funded dollars.
- Fund those items via Ready to Assign / payday allocation.
- Watch dashboard progress; adjust rules if funding stalls.
